The 16th Annual

and World Cup Regatta
is dedicated to the memory of
Henry Clark Alfred Scanlon (1934-2005)
Henry was president of the Irish Cultural Society of New Orleans for 10 years and honored as President Emeritus on April 27, 2003. Henry Scanlon was born May 10, 1934 in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was the eighth and last child of Edmond and Beulah Scanlon.
He graduated from Warren Easton High School in 1951, the proud owner of a “Purple and Gold” (his school colors) Jeep. After graduating, he went to work for the New Orleans Public Service Overhead Line Section in 1952 and joined the Navel Air Reserve. He later transferred to the Navel Reserve Seabee Unit, became a Command Master Chief and served 37 years, retiring April 8, 1989. In his civilian job he was an overhead power lineman and became the youngest man to become Foreman.
In 1953, he married Carolyn Lestremau. They had four children Rusty, Kathy, Jackie, and Danny; eight grandchildren, Sam, Erin, Kelly, David, Carrie Lynne, Ryan, Emily and Breah; and two great grandchildren, Maddie and Olivia. Henry and Carolyn had 52 years wonderful years together before his death in February 2005.
The facts of an individual’s life can only give a one dimensional view. But Henry was more than just the facts. He was raised in a large loving family and learned early in life that giving of one’s time, energy, and love to others was a vital part of a well lived life. Henry loved God, his Family, his Country, the Navy, and especially being Irish.
Henry will be missed by the Irish community and all who knew and loved him.
