Piping and Drumming Competition at the
The Celtic Nations Heritage Festival of Louisiana is proud to announce their first annual Piping and Drumming competition. We are proud to offer individual competition in the Amateur grades for piping and drumming and a competition for duet and mini band. Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the various grades and categories. Piping and Drumming competition will begin at 9:00 A.M.. Check in will begin at 8:00.
This is an unsanctioned competition but rules of the Eastern Unites States Pipe Band Association (EUSPBA), will be followed. EUSPBA rules can be reviewed at www.euspba.org/pdf/pub-rulesnregs.pdf Membership in the EUSPBA is not required to compete. There is an $10.00 entry fee for early registration postmarked on or before October 9th and a $18.00 fee for entries received after October 9th.
Register can be accomplished by downloading the application form and mailing it to the address below. Walk on entries will be permitted only at the discretion of the judge pending the number of competitors registered and prior to the beginning of that event. Piping Competition
Competition Rules
Order of Play Competitors must sign in with the steward for their particular event prior to the start of that event. If an order of play has been established, all competitors must follow that order of play. Any competitor failing to report to the steward when called may be disqualified from that event. Reasonable effort will be made to maintain the written order of play; however, the steward is the final determiner of the order of play.
Ties No judge will award any two (or more) competitors within an event the same score/placing through sixth place
Additional Rules No person may compete unless he/she is in appropriate Highland Dress. Decisions of the judge will be final. The judge reserves the right to disqualify any competitor guilty of misconduct.
Individual Piping Selection Requirements Piping selection is organized into five grades according to ability and experience. Individual piping competitors shall submit the following number of tunes according to grade and type of competition. The selection for 6/8 march is one set of the indicated number of tunes played straight through.
*Play one twice through
Grade 1 and Grade 2 - The March and the Strathspey & Reel will be held as two separate contests.
Grade 3 requirement for the Strathspey & Reel contest is one 4-part Strathspey (or two separate 2-part Strathspeys) and one 4-part Reel (or two separate 2-part reels).
Grade 4 has been divided into two separate categories according to age: age 17 and under, and, age 18 and over. The musical requirement is one four-parted or two different two-parted marches in 2/4 time. In all other grades the requirement is for tunes with a minimum of four parts. Grade 4 Piobaireachd will be offered as ground only. Grade 4 Slow March shall be two parts of music. Two-parted Slow Airs are acceptable.
Grade 5 is restricted to those playing the practice chanter only in competition and not to those playing the bagpipe in band competition. The musical requirement is one four-parted or two different two-parted marches in 2/4, 4/4, or 6/8 time.
Duet Piping Competition will be a single competition open to all pipers regardless of grade of playing. The submission requirement is one selection of a two parted slow march. Evaluation will focus on tuning, tone, execution and expression.
Mini Band Competition will consist of a minimum of four pipers, one snare and a bass drum. There is no maximum limit on the number of players that can participate in each mini band including addition of tenor drummers. Bands will be evaluated based on the performances of the sum total of all players who perform with the band. This event is open to all bands and is not graded. Each band is expected to meet the minimum musical and time requirements of the grade level they would normally compete with in Medley (Grade 1-3)or Quick March Medley (Grade 4-5).
Drumming Competition
Drumming Events and Requirements Drumming competition will be offered in the amateur grades for snare, tenor and bass drum this year. Each drumming competitor in grade 4 or higher will be accompanied by a minimum of one (1) and a maximum of two (2) pipers obtained by the competitor, or in the absence of accompaniment, a piping recording may be substituted. It is the responsibility of the competitor to provide the music and the tape recorder and its operation.
Individual snare drumming competitors shall submit the following selection of tunes according to grade.
*Grade 1: Drum Solo event, the individual competitor shall perform only on a pipe band snare drum without any additional accompaniment.
Grade 4Sr. and 4Jr.: One 4-part March or two different 2-part Marches or one 2-part March played twice. May be of any time signature.
Grade 5: Two parts of a march, any time signature on the drum pad. No piper is required. Grade 5 drummers are restricted to those playing the drum pad only in competition and are note open to those playing the snare drum in band competition.
